Transmission fluid is a miracle oil. It serves many purposes in your vehicle. Most people know it helps cool your transmission. But it also contains detergents, so it can hold in suspension the tiny particles of trash, metal and clutch material that come off the internal parts of your transmission. These bits of trash are captured in your transmission filter, enabling your fluid to stay clean and effectively lubricate. Over time, the filter will get full of material and will no longer clean the fluid. When this happens, your fluid will reach maximum density, holding as much trash as it can.
