Advice From Dunn Transmissions

"Don't Do It!"

There are some common-sense things you just should not do to your transmission. Here’s a partial list:
Don’t leave the shift lever in park without setting the emergency brake. If your car gets hit while parked, even gently, it could break the parking pawl. That could allow your vehicle to roll down the street unattended.
Don’t downshift to brake. A forced downshift at a high engine RPM causes excessive wear on your transmission’s clutches and bands.
Don’t shift into drive or reverse when your engine is idling high. This can cause abrupt transmission engagement, which can lead to early failure of internal parts. Let your fluid warm to proper operating temperature, your engine warm up and idle down before engaging the transmission.
Don’t race. Normal vehicles can’t tolerate that form of abuse. You may damage all of your vehicle’s drive line components.
Stop before you shift. Before changing directions, your vehicle should be at a complete stop.
Don't Rock you are stuck in mud or sand, dig it out or call a wrecker. Quickly shifting between reverse and drive can build up excessive heat, which can burn your transmission.
Get the drive wheels off the ground when you tow your car. If it’s an allwheel or full-time fourwheel drive, it should be flat towed with all wheels off the ground. Follow these simple items and you may extend the life of your transmission.
